Nino Bernardo tells us his own story in the video “Wing Chun the Essence by Nino Bernardo” by Asaco Films.
Now this is our personal addition to the story:
Nino Bernardo had a close relationship with Wong Shun Leung. He trained under Wong for many hours, days and years. Nino used to be Wong’s assistant in many of his seminars and he was Wong’s representative in Europe until Wong passed away.
“Yip Man didn’t have one, Wong Shun Leung didn’t have one, so Nino Bernardo doesn’t want one.”
To use this lineage as a marketing tool is really powerful since everything related to Wong Shun Leung sells and there are many who take advantage of his name. Nino Bernardo doesn’t give any diplomas or certificates, according to him: “Yip Man didn’t have one, Wong Shun Leung didn’t have one, so Nino Bernardo doesn’t want one.”
Neither does he have representatives but “students and friends” from all over the world who’ve been following his vision of Wing Chun for many years and who still attend his seminars to keep up with his latest experiences and discoveries, to learn and above it all, to train a lot.
Thanks to this philosophy, Nino inspires the investigation of Wing Chun and teaches awareness in working the system, and not wasting time in unnecessary or secondary activities, which matches the very principles of Wing Chun. The time dedicated to marketing and self-promoting could be dedicated to training instead; this, amongst other things, is the attitude that Nino Bernardo encourages.
He encourages us to think for ourselves and to question everything we do, even his very own teachings.
We are interested in the vision of the system that Nino Bernardo is promoting, which is ruled by logic and attention to detail. He encourages us to think for ourselves and to question everything we do, even his very own teachings. Results will appear, as long as you focus on your current assignments. He says “if you don’t have it, then it’s not yours” . Put aside your ego and get to work!
“If you don’t have it, then it’s not yours.”
Another important value of Nino Bernardo which fascinates us is that he’d repeat everything as many times as necessary for us to understand, with a relentless obsession for everyone to learn the necessary tools properly and should he see anything wrong, he’ll tell you without hesitation, because as he says: “A good friend needs to be brutally honest!”.
In his seminars, Nino focuses on the details. This is his priority. He does not just give us a physical and sweaty workout, he wants us to get the finer points and details so that we can take the knowledge home to further investigate and study. Is your ego letting you see all the details that you miss from the exercices that you think you already know? This kind of constant discussion with your own ego is another very interesting point in Nino Bernardo‘s methodology.
“A good friend needs to be brutally honest!”
With this we conclude a bit of information about who Nino Bernardo is and what he teaches.
So if you’re interested in Wing Chun and you have the chance, go meet him with an open mind and your eyes open, so you can observe first hand what is he really teaching and decide for yourself if that makes any sense at all.
